Huawei launches the Media Pad and the Honor

Huawei has finally launched two devices that have been in the ‘coming soon’ list for the last few months; the Media Pad Tablet and the Huawei Honor.

The Media Pad is already available at Safaricom shops, retailing at a competitive price of Kshs 34,999/-. It also comes bundled with 1.5 GB free data.

The Media Pad boasts of the latest Android OS, 4.0 ICS. It comes loaded with a dual-core 1.2 GHz Scorpion processor. Other features include:

  • IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen, 256K colors
  • 190 x 124 x 10.5 mm in dimensions, around 390 g in weight
  • Display size of 800 x 1280 pixels, 7.0 inches (~216 ppi pixel density)
  • 8 GB inbuilt storage, 8 GB ROM, 1 GB RAM
  • 5 MP, 2592×1944 pixels with autofocus plus a secondary camera 1.3 MP, 720p@30fps
  • MSM8260 Snapdragon Qualcomm chipset
  • Li-Po 4100 mAh standard battery

Will the Media Pad compete with the already established tabs like the Galaxy tabs?

Safaricom shops are also selling the Huawei Honor, which marks Huawei’s entry into the ‘high end smart’ phones category.

Retailing at just Kshs 31,999/-, the Huawei Honor will seek to compete with the likes of Samsung Galaxy SII and the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc S.

The Honor was released late last year and should have landed here earlier.

The Honor comes with the following features:

  • Android OS, v2.3 (Gingerbread), upgradable to v4.0
  • 1.4 GHz Scorpion processor
  • Qualcomm MSM8255T Snapdragon chipset
  • 122 x 61 x 11 mm in dimensions, with about 140 g in weight
  • TFT capacitive touchscreen display type, with about 480 x 854 pixels, 4.0 inches (~245 ppi pixel density) display size
  • 1 GB inbuilt storage, 512 MB RAM and a 4 GB ROM.
  • 8 MP, 3264×2448 pixels with autofocus and LED flash .
  • A VGA secondary camera.

With a bundling of a 1.5 GB free data, the Honor should be able to give buyers an extra choice.

Huawei bounces back with the new Ideos Y100

Huawei has unveiled a new Ideos, the Y100. The Ideos Y100 will be retailing at Kshs 8,449/-, and is understood to be Huawei’s answer to other new entry level smartphones.

The Ideos u8150 replacement boasts of the following features:

  • Android OS v2.3 Gingerbread
  • A 800 MHz Qualcomm MSM7225A CPU
  • 2.8 inch TFT Capacitive touchscreen, 320 x 240 display, 10.9mm slim
  • 3.2 MP camera (with video record/replay)
  • 3G data speeds, with 7.2 Mbps
  • Wi-fi enabled + hotspot
  • 512MB ROM internal storage, with 256MB RAM
  • Micro USB, 3.5mm earphone jack
  • 1050mAh battery
  • Power saving mode with All back-up and fast boot

The Ideos Y100 will have special Safaricom UI customization, and is upgradeable to Android ICS.

Other special Safaricom requirements include a power saving mode, and a 2GB external memory. The Ideos Y100 has a fast boot, and takes only about 5 seconds to power on.

So finally a budget Android smartphone, with version 2.3.  What is your take?
